OK I just thought I'd share some bits of fun. I really had a great childhood. Lots of fun with my siblings, friends and family. I'll try to share a bit along as it comes to me.
To start things off, I'll start with a Grandad named Axthle. The name sets the stage and says it all. Granddad was to say the least, a "character." He spent his life as a truck driver for International. He was quite proud of his work and all the people he had gotten to know all along the east coast.
He was an extremely outgoing person and a HOOT to grow up with. After retiring,
grandad bought a "fancy" van and decided to take his herd of grandchildren (10 of us ranging in age from 6 to 15) for a trip down the east coast to show us off. We fondly refer to our experience as "Camp Axthle."
There are many funny moments and stories from this trip. One of my favorites revolves around a community swimming hole we visited along the way. Picture this- one 70 year old man and 10 kids in a public pool. Needless to say it was chaos. No woman in her right mind would ever attempt this feat, but with the patience of Jobe, grandad had us all under control.
My grandad was quite the entertainer and liked to play little pranks on us kids. As we swam about we heard a shrill shriek from a portly lady at the shallow end of the pool. She jumped up out of the water as we all bolted to see what the comotion is all about. As she bobbed up and down running from the cause of her scare, up popped my grandad with his combover strands of hair wrapped over his eyes and a huge smile on his face. His expression was priceless, we all laughed knowing what indeed had taken place for this poor unsuspecting lady- Yes he had swam up under her, grabbed her foot and BIT her toe! His words to her- "There must be something down there," and off he swam chuckling. You see from under the water this lady resembled my dear cousin and SHE was to be the recipient of grandad's little prank.
